Johannesburg - AngloGold Ashanti [JSE:ANG], Harmony Gold [JSE:HAR], Gold Fields [JSE:GFI] and Sibanye Gold [JSE:SGL] have felt tremors in their headquarters, with reports of mineworkers being trapped underground.
A 5.3 magnitude earthquake hit parts of South Africa on Tuesday, shaking buildings in the financial capital of Johannesburg.
The US Geological Survey said the earthquake, originally thought to be a tremor, was centred in Orkney, an area with a high concentration of deep gold mines.
The area round Johannesburg and to its south is home to some of the deepest gold mines in the world.
AngloGold Ashanti has sent a team down its shafts to check on its teams, reported eNCA.
The broadcaster also reported that the operations of Harmony Gold in Johannesburg are not affected.
