Johannesburg - Coal producers have offered workers a 5.6% wage hike, Solidarity said on Monday.
The offer is below the current inflation rate of about 6%.
Solidarity is demanding a 10% pay hike but noted that the 5.6% offered is better than the 4% offered to workers in gold mining industry, said general secretary Gideon du Plessis.
"The coal industry is experiencing greater financial and labour stability and this stability will hopefully have a positive effect on the further progress of the negotiations," said du Plessis in a statement.
Du Plessis urged that a speedy settlement be reached.
"The outcome of negotiations in the coal industry has a ripple effect on the electricity giant Eskom's activities due to their interdependence," he said.
The Chamber of Mines represents coal miners such as Exxaro Resources [JSE:EXX] and Coal of Africa [JSE:CZA].
