Bokoni strikers dismissed

Johannesburg - More than 2000 workers at the Bokoni Platinum mine were fired for taking part in an illegal strike that began last week.

"The official figure is 2161 workers..." Bokoni Platinum executive Joel Kesler said on Tuesday.

A large part of the Limpopo-based company's 3500 permanent staff and 900 contractors embarked on an illegal strike on Monday.

Formal dismissal notices were issued after disciplinary hearings on Friday.

At the time, Kesler said the number of dismissed workers would not be released to the media.

He said mining management had received reports of threats of intimidation, but no acts of violence or damage to property had occurred.

No formal demands were received from the strikers, and union leadership had "distanced" itself from the protest.
