Ramaphosa lends hand with Lonmin burials

Johannesburg - Cyril Ramaphosa's investment holding company, Shanduka announced on Saturday that it would contribute R2m towards the burial of the 34 men who were killed in a shooutout at the Lonmin [JSE:LON] mine, in the North West.

The company has condemned the violence that erupted when police officers clashed with mineworkers.

"It is critical that all parties take meaningful steps to ensure that nothing of this nature ever happens again. For this reason, Shanduka Group supports a full and thorough investigation into the circumstances that gave rise to this incident," read a statement from the company.

The company also offered its condolences to the families of the deceased.

Meanwhile, Lonmin has opened a helpline for the families of the Lonmin shootings.

Family members seeking to locate their loved one could call the tollfree number 0800 668 690 or a regular landine number 014 571 2009 to get information on whether their relatives were arrested or hospitalised.

A help desk was also established outside the Lonmin Andrew Saffy hospital where families would be helped with identifying the bodies of their loved ones.

Family members were told they would also be able to get information for burial aid at the desk, as well as receive counselling.

A total of 34 people were killed in a shootout that erupted near the mine on Thursday when police tried to disperse striking miners.

More than 78 people were injured. Another 10 people had by then been killed in the violent protests at the mine over the past week.
