Frankfurt - Volkswagen said a probe into its cars’ carbon-dioxide emissions affects far fewer vehicles than originally thought, easing one front in the pollution scandal that has plagued the carmaker for nearly three months.
The company and German authorities found slight deviations in nine model variants with an annual production of about 36 000 cars, the Wolfsburg, Germany-based carmaker said in a statement on Wednesday. It had initially estimated as many as 800 000 vehicles would be affected.
Volkswagen said it no longer faces potential damages of as much as €2bn due to carbon-dioxide emissions irregularities. Whether there is a “minor economic impact” remains to be seen as the cars’ emissions are measured again, the company said.
The shares rose 4.6%, the most since November 30, to €129.70 at 13:03.
