Johannesburg - Safety remains the number one priority, ArcelorMittal South Africa [JSE:ACL] said on Friday in a Sens statement containing its unaudited operational information for the quarter ended 31 March 2017.
It had two fatalities at its Saldanha plant on April 3 2017 - both contractor employees. However, in the first quarter of 2017 its lost time injury frequency rate (LTIFR) improved from 1.17 to 0.44 when compared to the first quarter of 2016.
The company said it experienced difficult trading conditions in the domestic market. The volatility in the rand/dollar exchange rate continues to impact the business significantly.
At the same time the refurbishment of coke batteries at Newcastle Works is progressing as planned and should be completed in the second quarter of 2017.
Liquid steel production was down 2% and local sales down 3%, while export sales were up 9%.
