Mango strike called off following agreement - union

Cape Town - The Mango pilot strike has been called off after trade union Solidarity reached an agreement with the low-cost airline late on Thursday night.

The pilots began the strike on Monday morning after the airline declared a dispute with the trade union, causing negotiations to deadlock.

In a statement issued on Friday morning, Solidarity deputy general secretary Deon Reyneke said Mango’s management came to the negotiating table with a "solution-driven approach" and Solidarity’s members therefore gave the trade union a mandate to accept a new offer.

“It was of particular importance to our members to reach an agreement that predominantly outlines the scheduling of flight rosters and hours of work Mango requires from them.

"Mango agreed to it and committed itself to bring such an agreement to the table within the next six months. This is already a step in the right direction as far as our members are concerned,” Reyneke said.

According to Reyneke, Mango also agreed to grant members a 7% increase, which was accepted.

He said Solidarity members at Mango have already reported for work on Friday morning.

The pilots initially demanded an 8.5% salary increase after their last three-year salary agreement with the airline expired at the end of September. Mango was offering a 6% increase.
