ATNS participates in Aviation Gender Summit

Aug 10 2018 17:10

Air Traffic and Navigation Services (ATNS) was actively participating at the first Global Aviation Gender Summit in Africa.

It started on Wednesday at the Cape Town International Convention Centre and ended on Friday.

Approximately 600 delegates from across the globe attended the event.

According to the ATNS, aviation is a trillion-dollar industry and employs approximately 62 million people worldwide. One of the main focus areas of the summit is the “creation of an environment that is more gender-balanced and provides for equal opportunities for women”, according to International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) secretary general Dr Fang Liu, who earlier participated in a panel discussion that included former SA deputy president and current UN Women’s executive director Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka and Deputy Minister of Transport Sindisiwe Chikunga.

Tendani Ndou, principal of the ATNS Training Academy, was one of the guest speakers at the summit. Her paper primarily focused on various gender issues, including, but not limited to gender roles and relations, the influence of socialising agents on gender roles, the status quo of gender equity and overcoming gender bias within the aviation industry.

“It is time that we dissect the core of gender inequality, not only in the aviation industry but across all sectors,” commented Ndou.

The summit, hosted by the SA Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) under the auspices of ICAO and in conjunction with the SA Department of Transport.
