SABMiller SA to cut 1 400 jobs

2014-04-14 16:45

Johannesburg - A spokesperson for the Food and Allied Workers Union (Fawu) says it has called an urgent meeting after hearing that SABMiller is considering cutting 1 400 jobs.

The spokesperson said rumours were that the cuts would occur at its Amalgamated Beverage Industries (ABI) soft-drinks bottling unit.

Fawu said it wanted to have talks with ABI, one of the biggest bottlers and distributors of Coca Cola brands in the southern hemisphere.

SABMiller's South African spokesperson  was not immediately available for comment.

ABI, which accounts for about 60% of Coca Cola sales in South Africa, employs about 3 600 people.

And who do we have to thank for this happening, our corrupt government. Nobody wants to invest money in SA, unemployment will keep on growing, it's worse than ever before. Strikes, protests, and corruption is all we have to give as security because THAT's what's happening right now 24/7. And seeing that our government isn't doing something about it, we'll have to do something about it. Ask yourself, "Is my job secure" Empty promises for 20 years is all we have to show.

Oh my word if big companies are cutting thousands of jobs, what about small entrepreneurs?pls have mercy companies directors think about what will become of the dependants of this employees.

      Jonathan Woods - 2014-04-14 20:20

Why should they? You and the government you voted in, and are probably going to vote in again are the ones responsible for all this mess. Don't blame the company directors. It is their job to protect the value of the companies. So take responsibility for once and deal it!

@Fannie : I hear you, but at the end of the day our government has created an environment where business cannot make money unless they cut costs

      Fannie Mashilo - 2014-04-14 20:40

      Pls elaborate amdyn.

Cutting 1400 out of 3600 jobs is almost 40% of ABI's workforce! That is huge. Does anyone know what the reason for this may be? Is it a drop in sales? More automation that is being introduced? It will be bad news if this report is correct. But also a wake up call for workers and unions to look at protecting jobs rather than destroying them with unreasonable demands. Fact is that SA workforce is often very inefficient and many companies have double the workers that they actually need if productivity was lifted. If you have five workers to do the job of three workers the result is that their perform like two workers would.
