Johannesburg - Petro SA will suspend operations at its Mossel Bay facilities in Western Cape for 37 days for maintenance, the state-owned company said on Wednesday.
"The maintenance shutdown, which will start on September 22, will affect the... gas-to-liquids refinery and the offshore FA Platform," spokesperson Thabo Mabaso said
The FA Platform is used to drill for gas. Customers had been informed about the shutdown and encouraged to make alternative supply arrangements.
Products which would not be available during the shutdown included liquefied petroleum gas, propane, carbon dioxide, liquid nitrogen, and liquid oxygen.
The company had made contingency plans for the supply of products such as diesel and petrol in the southern Cape.
"The statutory shutdown is aimed at ensuring the integrity of equipment and systems at the two facilities, in compliance with the Mine Health and Safety Act," Mabaso said.
The shutdown was expected to involve a combined workforce of 4000 people, including temporary workers from the Mossel Bay community.
On average, 1200 people worked at the refinery.
