Eskom: Medupi on track for 2014 start

2014-02-25 11:43

Johannesburg - The first unit of power utility Eskom's Medupi power plant is still due to come on line in the second half of 2014, chief executive Brian Dames said on Tuesday.

Eskom, which declared power emergencies twice last week, is racing to keep the lights on and Medupi's construction has been plagued by several delays in the past related to design flaws, labour unrest and other problems.

    With the level of corruption in awarding the Medupi tenders and sole criteria being how much money the ANC can make, I would be surprised if this plant ever works fully.

      Right. The anc made at least R5billion out of Medupi. That is our taxpayer money just transferred to a political party. In any real democracy such blatant corruption will never be tolerated but in Africa it is applauded. No wonder it will always be the "dark" continent, dark meaning "no electricity" in this case. What a waste!

      Read somewhere, Understanding electricity, AC= Alternating current:- DC= Direct current:- ANC= Absolutely No Current.

    Won't hold my breath, strikes mid year will put everything on hold till the wekkers get what they demand. I see Eksdom being held to ransom.

      Maybe if the workers did'nt get payd peanuts then there will be more progress. Rich homesteads should be charged more for electricity to pump more money into the workers.

      Jo Barton - 2014-02-25 12:10

      Ayanda Koza - if the workers are not getting paid what they want, then why don't they look for other jobs where they get paid what they want. They knew their salaries before they accepted the job, so why complain now?

      Mike Heyns - 2014-02-25 12:11

      @Ayanda Koza: You cannot "buy" skills or knowledge!! Neither logic! Take yourself for example ....

      @Ayanda..and people shouldn't steal lectricary!!!!

      Sadly I think you're right. I really don't beieve we will see one Watt of power this year from Medupi. This is just election talk to try and appease voters. It is absolutely criminal that almost seven years after the start of the power crisis Eskom has still not managed to build a single power station ... and all that thanks to the corruption and greed of the ANC and all the fatcats that are trying to make a fast buck.

    Why should I start believing you now?

  • Mike Heyns - 2014-02-25 12:09

    If something sounds to good to be true? It usually is to good to be true!!

  • Gemasogpf - 2014-02-25 21:33

    Eskom should get an ultimatum from consumers. Stop exporting electricity or we stop paying!
