The Mail & Guardian has appointed Sipho Kings as acting editor-in-chief following the resignation of Khadija Patel and her deputy last month.
The newspaper shared the announcement on Twitter on Wednesday, with Kings describing his new role as "daunting" but also "incredibly exciting". Kings has been the news editor at the paper and reported extensively on environmental matters.
The Mail & Guardian has in recent years been affected by declining revenues, threatening the payment of staff salaries.
In August 2019, employees were notified about possible retrenchments and in April, former former editor-in-chief said the paper had taken a knock from declining advertising revenue.
