The police ministry says former SABC chairperson Ellen Tshabalala, who has an outstanding warrant of arrest, is still at large, but the law enforcers are working with her lawyers to try and trace her whereabouts.
The Johannesburg Magistrate Court has issued a warrant of arrest for Tshabalala as she could not be found to be formally charged with fraud for fake qualification accusations.
"We are looking for her and also engaging with her lawyers to assist us in locating her," said Gauteng police spokesperson Colonel Noxolo Kweza.
Tshabalala resigned from the SABC in December 2014, after she was unable to provide proof of her qualifications following an inquiry by a parliamentary committee. The inquiry heard that though Tshabalala had registered for her BComm degree in both 1988 and 1996, she failed to obtain the qualification. The University of South Africa’s records further showed that had also registered for a diploma in labour relations in 1995 but did not complete that either.
After the revelations and her subsequent resignation, the Congress of the People laid fraud charges against her in 2015.
Apart from the alleged misrepresentation of her tertiary qualifications, Tshabalala’s name has been mentioned by several former SABC personnel at the Zondo commission of inquiry into state capture, who have alleged she is one of the people who contributed to the collapse of the public broadcaster’s finances.
Former SABC CEO Lulama Mokhobo said she was pushed out of the organisation by Tshabalala and former COO Hlaudi Motsoeneng when she questioned the controversial multi-million rand deal between MultiChoice and SABC.
