Net1 appoints former Cell C chair to its board

Payment solutions provider Net1 UEPS Technologies [JSE:NT1] has appointed retired Cell C chair Kuben Pillay to its board.

The group is the parent company of Cash Paymaster Services, which used to run SA's social grant payment system. It said Pillay will join as an independent director from 1 June 2020, and will also sit on the Net1 board’s nominating and corporate governance committee, as well as the audit and remuneration committee.

Pillay retired as the non-executive chairman of Cell C in October 2019 after serving in that position for a little over two years. Prior to that, he was the non-executive chairman of Primedia and had served as its CEO before taking up the chairmanship. Pillay is currently a non-executive director at Outsurance, investment holding company Sabvest, and at Transaction Capital, the company that owns minibus finance business SA Taxi. He also serves on various board committees in these companies.

Net1 said Pillay would bring diverse localised management and experience in legal, digital, transaction processing and technology operations to its board. He holds law qualifications from the University of the Witwatersrand and Howard University in Washington DC.

"I am very pleased that Kuben will be joining our board. His qualifications and broad experience in numerous sectors will be very welcome," said Net1 board chairman Christopher Seabrooke.
