Icasa's new acting chair pledges commitment after Mahlaloga’s conviction

The Independent Communications Authority of South Africa appointed Keabetswe Modimeng as it acting chairperson on Monday.

The appointment of Modimeng is significant given former chair Rubben Mahlaloga’s conviction on fraud charges and removal from the Icasa board last week.

In a statement released by Icasa on Monday Modimeng reaffirmed his commitment to the mandate of the broadcasting authority.

"We are governed by legislation and guided by the public interest mandate and for that we will continue to put the South African public first when taking decisions," said Modimoeng.

Modimeng said Icasa would ensure that the its regulatory decisions advance transformation in the ICT sector, support economic growth and unlock opportunities presented by the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

Mahlaloga was sentenced to 20 years in prison for money laundering and fraud last month.

The National Assembly also approved a report last week, which recommended that Mahlaloga be dismissed.
