Deadline for digital migration still to be set - minister

The official date to switch off analogue signal for broadcasting is yet to be set by the minister of communications.

This is according to a written response from new minister Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams. Economic Freedom Fighters MP Ntombovuyo Mente had asked a parliamentary question about the deadline for digital migration to be completed.

Her predecessor, Nomvula Mokonyane, said at a briefing in October that the Free State would be the first to be switched off from the current analogue TV system to digital terrestrial television and the process was expected to be completed by the end of the year, News24 previously reported.

Ndabeni-Abrahams referred to the Digital Migration Rules, set out in the government Gazette on December 14, 2012, to respond to questions about timelines of the process.

"The date for the commencement of dual illumination period as well as the date for the final switch-off of the analogue signal will be published by the Minister in the Gazette," Ndabeni-Abrahams quoted from the rules.

Ndabeni-Abrahams added that she was yet to set a deadline, based on a revised delivery model and plan.

The department of communications revised the delivery model, which was approved by Cabinet, she explained.

"Although Cabinet has approved July 2020 as the date for analogue switch off, the minister will monitor progress and after consultation with the Cabinet, gazette the date based on the progress made," she said.
