A smart condom called i.Con that calculates the number of calories you're burning in the bedroom – or, as you might call it, a 'FitBit for sex'. A neurostimulator that can 'upload' knowledge to your brain.
These are just two of the gadgets that will be on show at the International Consumer Electronics Expo (ICEE) in Johannesburg this week.
From 7 – 9 November 2018, the ICEE – which has partnered with several constituencies to bring emerging technologies and opportunities for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in South Africa – will be on at the Sandton Convention Centre.
ICEE – the only professional consumer electronics expo in Africa, according to the organisers – will showcase technology that hasn't been released in SA yet, and give buyers the opportunity to negotiate prices directly with suppliers.
The exhibitors are all manufacturers and factory owners from China's technology hub, Shenzhen, which has been compared to Silicon Valley in the US. Shenzhen is in south-eastern China, on mainland China's border with Hong Kong.
'Tech to help you be more human'
According to the organisers, exhibitors are carefully selected to ensure that only high-quality products are exhibited.
Craig Wing, a futurist at Future World International, says the exhibition aims to show the "latest and greatest" technologies from China.
Speaking at the official announcement of the exhibition in Rosebank, Johannesburg last week, Wing said Future World International helped organisations both locally and internationally to understand the impact of technology, as well as how human beings could adapt to a world that is changing exponentially faster.
According to Wing, it's not just about electronics – it's about understanding how this technology affects us as human beings, and how we can use technology to better our experiences and be "more human".
Elva Wang, Project Manager at Hong Kong-based DFE International, also spoke at the briefing. According to Wang, the expo – back for a second year – will "showcase the latest cutting-edge technology in action".
"South Africans will have the opportunity to make connections with some of China’s biggest technology suppliers," she said.
South Africa has the largest consumer electronics market in Africa and is one of the top 20 global markets for consumer electronics products.
