Vodacom slashes UK roaming rates

2012-07-16 13:34

Johannesburg - Vodacom Group [JSE:VOD] subscribers travelling to the United Kingdom will save up to 76% on calls made to South Africa and receive free incoming calls, according to

However these savings, applicable to Vodacom prepaid, contract and top up customers, will be available only from July 20 to September 16 2012.

This promotion will include 60% savings for local calls in the UK. Customers will also save 76% on calls to South Africa, 45% on SMS messages and 71% on data roaming.

During the promotional period, customers will also save 100% on calls received from any network since they will not be charged for receiving calls, the report said.

"Vodacom is always looking at ways of providing value to its roaming customers. In April this year, we reduced data roaming rates by more than 70% for customers travelling to six African countries where Vodacom and Vodafone operate.

"Now we're offering customers travelling to the UK up to 100% savings so they can stay connected to their friends and loved ones without worrying about the cost," Minnie Maharaj, managing executive: wholesale and international services at Vodacom, is quoted as saying.

Promotional rates will apply on Vodafone only and standard rates will apply to all other networks.

Customers should therefore ensure that they are roaming on the Vodafone network and if necessary, manually select Vodafone UK as the preferred network provider on their handset.

The reduced roaming rates will be available to all Vodacom customers by default; no opt-in will be required.

Thanks for nothing Vodacom. A few weeks of "promo" pricing then back to being totally ripped off again. Nice trend we have in SA - totally over priced crap service in so many market sectors. Unbelievable how the consumer is expected to continue to accept this.

Agreed. R128 a mb right now. I bought an O2 prepaid card 3 weeks ago for 10 pounds, it came with 500mb of data and 300smses. And it worked in Europe too. Vodacom is a total rip off.

That is great news. Now we just wait to see the "roaming rates" in South Africa drop as well. How to win friends and influence people = Give them something they can see in their packet (read Cellphone account). Thanks Vodacom. Still the best.

I would never ever take a chance with Vodacom overseas no matter what they say. The safest is to switch off your phone and buy a local sim card when you get there. Works for me and that ain't going to change.

Why are only the prepaid customers, most of who can't even travel to the UK, benefitting from this? This is totally ridiculous!

      ryan.a.smith.3958 - 2012-07-16 22:01

      cant you read ??

  • Francois R Nel - 2012-07-16 16:09

Why pre-paid? Surely the majority of people flying are contract owners. Alot of hot air, but the poeding is ice cold

      ryan.a.smith.3958 - 2012-07-16 22:01

      also can't read ? contract too !

why do vodacom deals always have an expiration date? and slashing call costs to just the u.k is stupid. if would have been better if they cut call costs world wide. who are they fooling???

  • marcus.steenberg.7 - 2012-07-16 16:56

SA consumers are ripped off so badly by their mobile providers. For the Rand equivalent of R400 (£31) I get unlimited minutes, unlimited texts and 2GB of data (even with my obsessive facebooking, tweeting and youtube'ing I never come close to exceeding) - SA providers could give it to you at that price but just like the banks, energy companies and pretty much everyone else in SA, they are greedy and what choice do you have but to pay. If I was back there I would be paying as well - sucks.

CELL C is the cheapest right now, change to them and vodacom will become cheap and then you can go back to the again!! Stop being sheep!!! Got a SII with 100 minutes anytime and 250 mb for R280...Vodacom offered the same phone for R300 without the minutes!!!!
