Third of Mxit users favour secrecy bill

Johannesburg - Mobile social network Mxit said on Wednesday that 29% of its users support the controversial protection of information bill, which passed through the National Assembly on Tuesday.

It follows a poll run by the group, which boasts 44 million registered users, 50 000 new registered users each day, and 24 billion recorded messages each month.

"To get an idea of what was in the minds of new voters, more than 500 Mxit users, aged 18 and older, were asked whether they support or were against the bill.

"Of the respondents, 29% supported the bill, 45% were against and 26% indicated they didn't have an opinion," Mxit said.

The group said that as South African politics typically split along racial lines, the results were also analysed from this perspective.

Black respondents were least opposed to the bill: of those with an opinion, 53% opposed the bill, and 47% supported it.

White respondents were the most opposed to the bill.

For all groups, more respondents opposed the bill than supported it or indicated no opinion, Mxit said.
