Cape Town - President Jacob Zuma has signed a proclamation directing the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) to investigate the troubled South African Post Office (Sapo), the Presidency said in statement on Tuesday.
The probe involves allegations of serious maladministration, improper or unlawful conduct by staff and unlawful appropriation or expenditure of public money.
"Other allegations to be investigated by the SIU include irregularities, malpractice or maladministration", said the statement.
These relate to:
- the management of immovable property;
- intentional or negligent loss of public money or damage to public property;
- the management of immovable property
- the implementation of the WebRipost system and
- loans granted to Courier and Freight Group;
The SIU will further investigate allegations of irregularities relating to the recruitment, selection and appointment of officials, including the payments which were made by the Sapo to fictitious officials or employees.
Meanwhile, a report lodged two years ago about maladministration at Sapo is being finalised by the office of public protector Thuli Madonsela.
Madonsela's office said in January that the investigation is complete and just needs to be written, according to Sapa.
