8ta brand to become Telkom Mobile

2013-03-04 10:56

Cape Town - Telecommunications firm Telkom [JSE:TKG] is to restructure elements of its mobile business 8ta, according to Business Report.

Telkom reportedly told staff on Friday that it would "progressively change the 8ta brand to Telkom Mobile".

Telkom said in a statement that "elements of the market which had been serviced and marketed under the 8ta brand, will soon be serviced under the Telkom brand".

There had been reports that Telkom was looking to sell 8ta, but the operator said it had yet to receive an offer and did not comment further on speculation.

8ta was launched in 2010 and was expected to be a "formidable game changer in the local telecoms industry".

In the 6 months to September 2012, 8ta posted a R587m loss compared with a R1.066bn loss the year earlier. While subscribers grew to 1.1 million, said Business Report.

Patrick Saunders “Death Wish” would be a more appropriate choice of words for Telkom and/or any other enterprise foolish enough to do business with Telkom in its present state of chaos.

One can say too little too late but the illness runs deep in the heart of Telkom. They have all the hi-tech that competitors may wish to have but they don’t have the people to handle it. Telkom’s fate will be a human failure. They don’t belong in the mobile market and should get out of it. But that too will be too little too late. Telkom simply does not listen to advice. http://ikejakson.wordpress.com/2013/02/27/telkom-sa-the-inconvenient-truth/

8ta had such a promising marketing plan, the added bonus of having existing infrastructure and tons of resources at their disposal... what could possibly go wrong? Telkom, that's what.
