Sony unveils new flagship Xperia smartphones in Barcelona

Barcelona - Japanese electronics manufacturer Sony has launched its new range of flagship smartphones at the Mobile World Congress.

The Sony Xperia XZ2 and XZ2 Compact were announced on Monday during the world’s biggest mobile gathering currently taking place in Barcelona, Spain.

The phones feature curved backs and wireless charging. Users will need to make use of wireless earphones to listen to audio.

The Xperia XZ2 is expected to be released globally in April, and will feature 64 gigabytes of internal storage, with room for upgrade via a microSD card slot.

The device features a 5.7 inch display and 19 megapixel camera. It has the world’s first 4K HDR movie recording in a smartphone, offering users full HD 'super slow motion' at 960 FPS (frames per second).

The device also has a HDR Full HD+ 18:9 display using Sony’s BRAVIA TV technology and X-reality for mobile, for what Sony said is a movie-like viewing experience.

The XZ2 comes with 4GB of RAM, and runs a Snapdragon 845 chipset with 3180mAh Li-Ion battery. It also makes use of wireless charging.

The XZ2’s little sibling, the XZ2 Compact, is expected to be available at around the same time as the Xperia XZ2, and will also feature 64 gigabytes of internal storage which can be upgraded with a microSD card.

Differences between the two phones include a smaller display for the XZ2 Compact, and slightly smaller 2870mAh Li-Ion battery.

The XZ2 Compact will match the XZ2’s 19 megapixel camera, with the same video recording resolution, 4GB of RAM and the Snapdragon 845 chipset.

Sony also followed the trends of other major smartphone manufacturers by ditching the physical 3.5mm headphone jack on both its devices, to opt instead for audio via Bluetooth.
