Absa staff forced to quit, union claims

2012-05-10 21:55

Johannesburg - Almost 140 Absa employees are being forced to resign from the company in order to circumvent a mass retrenchment, trade union Solidarity said on Thursday.

"Employees at Absa were notified by e-mail this week that they will be retrenched on 9 June. This came in spite of Absa's continued denial that it is carrying out retrenchments," Solidarity deputy general secretary Dirk Hermann said in a statement.

"Absa went even further and sent employees forms with which to resign from the company... we are astounded by the callousness with which Absa is carrying out the process."

He said the IT employees were escorted out of Absa's offices and sent home for a three-month "gardening leave". They were told that Absa would consider them for other positions in the company.

"If employees complete and sign this [resignation] form, then it is no longer a case of retrenchment, but of resignation," Hermann said.

"The employees will therefore not be entitled to severance pay or unemployment insurance. From a legal perspective the implication is that someone who worked for Absa for 40 years will be walking away without a cent."

Absa spokesperson Zain Khan said the employees were placed on "a three-month re-assignment process".

"A dedicated... reassignment centre was set up to assist these employees with finding employment elsewhere in the Absa businesses," he said.

"All options were exhausted and discussions now commenced with those individuals who either opted not to take up available options within the business, or simply could not be placed because their skills did not match available opportunities."

Khan said Absa was "managing their exit out of the organisation".

"This does not, in any way, reflect a mass retrenchment exercise, as per our agreement with our recognised labour union Sasbo [SA Society of Bank Officials]."

  • Vaughan - 2012-05-10 22:24

Is this a continuation of the "restructuring" Absa undertook in Febuary which saw Absa Capital loose a considerable portion of its IT staff in a formation of a single IT unit across all business units? Or are they getting rid of more people?

      koos.vandermerwe.92 - 2012-05-10 23:47

Most propably getting rid of some whiteys with long service to lower their pension responsibilities. Oldest trick in the book.

      Ben - 2012-05-11 12:25

Johan Stemmet kan maar sy R50 van ABSA hou

      Zizzy - 2012-05-11 12:39

Got nothing to do with race Koos. What is it with you people???You're so exhausting.

      James - 2012-05-11 13:11

Maria Ramos strikes again!!! not only stuffing up transnet but also ABSA.

      Benn - 2012-05-11 18:57

They have to retrench- to ensure that comrade Maria Ramos Manuel does not need to take a pay cut on her R20 salary

  • miandra.vanzyl - 2012-05-10 23:03

well ABSA can be sure that a mass of people will also leave ABSA as their bank, surely I will. You cant trust them with your money if they are not loyal to their workers. All these months of lies...

  • Basil - 2012-05-10 23:04

If SASBO is all these people have as their last line of defence then, sorry to say it, they are all royally screwed. I have never come across a more useless, ball-less and toothless union in my life.

      Pat Kidson - 2012-05-11 00:40

Agreed. SASBO was one of the oldest staff associations in SA. Then it became a union .

      Repline - 2012-05-11 08:23

I SO agree Basil. SASBO is probably the most worthless union out there. When one of the banks summon them they come running with tail between the legs.

  • Thapelo - 2012-05-10 23:11

Why are they Targeting the IT GURUs??? What happened to FIFO and LIFO

      Pule - 2012-05-11 05:19

You contradicting yourself,Fifo first in first out, lifo last in first out has nothing to do with ABSA.Let all suffer unemployment ...

      Pule - 2012-05-11 07:04

Oden.FIFO AND LIFO is engineering language I've using for more than 13 years.I don't know what you're saying?

      Basil - 2012-05-11 07:05

I think they joined LaLa and Po to start their own kiddies tv show....

  • Adrian Delport - 2012-05-11 01:41

I do not expect nothing less from ABSA. They treat their long standing customers with contempt so why not their own staff. What comes around goes around.

  • Peliswa - 2012-05-11 02:23

I'm so glad that I resigned last year bcoz of them being rascist n not appreciate hard work nxa!

  • koos.vandermerwe.92 - 2012-05-11 03:22

Is it not time to make a run on the bank, ala Boland Bank?

      Gieljam - 2012-05-11 08:50

Ja en wie moet ons nou eindelik BEDANK?

  • Isaac - 2012-05-11 04:22

    Let the war begin

  • Andile - 2012-05-11 05:01

Is it not time for us as general public to stand up against this? Surely boycotting the bank's (ABSA) facilities will be a beginning. Their bank charges are so rediculous, they want to make super profits by sacrifising employees. Professions such as IT are professions that can easily be redeployed because of the amount of skills they have.

      Stephan - 2012-05-11 07:26

Andile you are 200000% correct. Read my post and also suggest we boycott them...Hit them where it hurts the most..CLOSING accounts, move investments etc will harm them hugely.

  • eugmar - 2012-05-11 06:47

ABSA sponsors so many sport events surely this costs the company millions per year why not use those funds to keep their employees???

  • Zahir - 2012-05-11 07:11

The Absa Ceo ramos earned about R15 million?

  • deabreu - 2012-05-11 07:12

And here I thought only the ANC and American companies (Walmart being a perfect example) were forcing things onto us by lieing and cheating their way around. Looks like UK/SA ventures are just as nasty.

  • Francois Steyl - 2012-05-11 07:16

I feel for all these people. If you ever think your job is stressful, imagine how stressful it is if you don't have one. I sincerely hope it works out for all those employees.

  • Stephan - 2012-05-11 07:24

MAY this be the downfall of this useless "Governmental Institution" Sorry for the employees but the management - USELESS!!! The only way to hit ABSA where it hurts: CLOSE ALL YOUR ACCOUNTS...I'm busy with this process.

      Tumelo - 2012-05-11 11:16

Only problem with that is that even more job losses will follow!

  • nicky.enslin.50 - 2012-05-11 07:39

A bank like ABSA that dont care about their clients, why would they then care about their employees?

  • Tumelo - 2012-05-11 07:55

We all know things aren't going that well in Europe and as a result local jobs take a knock in favour of \overseas skills\ from head office which basically legalised human trafficking. But denying people their entitled monies is evil!

  • Khetha Hlophe - 2012-05-11 07:58

This is stressing in a distance how much more if you are in it. I hope they will find something better instead.I advise you guys to keep on pushing until something happens.DO NOT GIVE UP

  • hein.helmand - 2012-05-11 08:00

ABSA,today, tommorow together forewa. What happened to their money market fund investments.Nobody says nothing

  • Jannie - 2012-05-11 08:01

ABSA the big spender! They are sponsering every possible thing -soccer, rugby, olympic games, noot vir 'n noot, etc. etc. Millions go down the drain, and it is all coming from the excessive bank fees that they charge us as their poor customers. I am in the process of changing banks! I hope more people will follow my example. There are much better banks out there than absa, that I hve found out when I started to shop arround. Let the absa titanic sink!

  • gerrie.visagie - 2012-05-11 08:22

I was recently offered a position at absa....glad I did not accept

      Napolita - 2012-05-11 08:52

YOU went to ABSA asking for a position, and they CHOSE to offer it to you. It's not as though they came over to beg you.

  • sanet.oelofse - 2012-05-11 08:23

Considering what Maria Ramos's bonuses have been over the past few years, recently she has deferred her R14mil, was this due on all the headcount cuts?

  • Albert - 2012-05-11 08:34

The way I read the article, nobody is forced to do anything! 2nd Rate journalist and publication looking for cheap publicity!!!!

  • kwbateman - 2012-05-11 08:41

I am a trustee of a residential complex and had a resident come to me - saying I am one of the Absa retrenched people - out of work. So no amount of denying will get me to believe their stories.

  • Napolita - 2012-05-11 08:48

Enough already! What's new here? Get on with it; employment and retrenchment are part of a labour market. If you want to be entitled to a job, well create your own company!

  • Riona - 2012-05-11 08:49

Well, what a shock. I'm one of those that was placed on "re-assisgnment". The only place you can go to look for internal jobs at Absa is in the branches. I would like to know what "re-assignment centres have been set up"?. When you do go onto the portal to apply for jobs, well there isn't a lot and the role you are trying to apply for is not there! Therefore you are looking at retrenchment. Absa, in my eyes proves to illustrate that they only care about themselves and not their employees!

      ava1962 - 2012-05-11 15:52

Agreed 100% Riona, I was in the same position some years back, there are very few jobs available on the portal, and even if you do apply for something/anything just to retain a job, you are denied because AA comes first.

  • MrSilver - 2012-05-11 10:46

@ Koos, its not about whiteys, many black employees have been retrenched and this 140 employees is a lie its way more. Branches have been retrenching all over. Head office, Absa Capital and ABSA private banking are most impacted by this. And yes thousands of blacks have been retrenched.

  • gerrit.volschenk - 2012-05-11 10:47

And soon the IT function will be contracted to a BEE firm linked to management.I shall not be surprised.

      jombo - 2012-05-11 12:51

well actually their IT is being taken over by the Indians from India

  • pjcbs - 2012-05-11 11:07

TODAY I pray, that TOMORROW, we will not be TOGETHER I wonder if Steve worked for ABSA

  • jolenevanniekerk - 2012-05-11 11:09

Take your business, ABSA and stick it!! I'm glad I moved my accounts away from you. Unethical business practice!!!!

  • edwardsch - 2012-05-11 11:27

Just remember that the strings and being pulled in London by Barclays. Restructure them out of the country. See what you get when you get into bed with a foreign bank !!!!!

  • Bobby - 2012-05-11 11:27

Considering the amount of time one has to wait to be served at Absa’s banking outlets and the frustration of speaking to the robotic faceless people at their call centres, methinks it would probably be wiser if Absa takes a good look at its poor service delivery and redeploys these people behind their counters. Redirect the mega bucks you spend on bragging about yourselves through advertising which in reality is rubbish. This money can beef up your HR resources.

  • Wouter - 2012-05-11 11:38

    Close your ABSA account!!!

  • Christo - 2012-05-11 12:17

To all ABSA account holders, do not join Steve, move your account were it counts. I found out Steve is after all working for ABSA. Join FNB

  • Ben - 2012-05-11 12:37

Been with ABSA since 91'. But I'd have to say...Steve... you just lost another client to FNB...

      etafrica - 2012-05-11 13:31

CAPITEC is a cheaper option Ben, hardly any fees and u can draw money in the supermarket, u don't need an ATM (where u get robbed)

  • johnny.engelbrecht1 - 2012-05-11 13:20

Nobody is mentioning the fact that ABSA IT is been outsourced to a outside company. What happened to proudly South African???

  • isabel.defaria - 2012-05-11 14:07

Absa retrenching and outsourcing the IT jobs out the country and President Zuma promising 1 million jobs ??? and on the other side the influx of chinese into this country opening up china towns in every area making it impossible for our small businesses to survive is not as if they are creating jobs for south africans go and have a look they employ mostly chinese who are streaming in by the thousands...

  • elaine.boardman - 2012-05-11 14:25

....this while Maria Ramos got a FAT BONUS cheque.... This is why I no longer bank with ABSA...!!

  • gielieensuzette - 2012-05-11 15:21

SASBo is also playing in the hands of ABSA and dancing the real as ABSA what the Union to dance, so you cant even trust SASBO they are false and won't go against ABSA, sorry ABSA as well as SASBo are a disgrace.

  • George - 2012-05-11 16:09

Simple. People must now QUIT ABSA. It's easy. Go to Capitec or FNB and you will be happier. ABSA is an alien organization that should be shut down.

  • neville.watson.94 - 2012-05-11 17:16

They sponsor so much sport, they can use it to create Jobs. I think i am going to another bank

  • maseratifittipaldi - 2012-05-12 00:39

I wonder what the senior managers at ABSA get paid. I wonder what for.

  • carel.wiekus - 2012-05-12 06:58

After almost 20 years I left this bank. More can do this.

  • Ashveer Budhai - 2012-05-12 08:14

Absa should close down there careers page on there website no point in advertising thousands of vacancies when they can accomade there current Employees really makes no Sense

  • alfredo.jordaan - 2012-05-12 09:33

Chineese and Indian companies from India and China. Will see lots more of these retranchments in various industries in SA. brace yourselfs inside source!!!

  • glenda.labuschagne - 2012-05-12 10:50

And yet Ramos get's how many millions............?????

  • glenda.labuschagne - 2012-05-12 11:03

Ramos messed up transnet, now it's absa's turn, oupa magashula messed up and was suspended from telkom and is now in charge of THE LARGEST FINANCIAL INSTITUTION IN SOUTH AFRICA.........? Don't you get it?? They want to drain the economy, and the floor of the well is already cracking!!!!

  • christopher.m.lowe - 2012-05-12 12:23

No loss at all. Absa Bank is particularly incompetent and it's level of 'service' at times borders on incomprehensible. They need to lose a lot more of their staff, starting at the top, and slim down with more intelligent, caring and helpful employees.

  • Kelvin - 2012-05-15 09:47

These guys are so useless they cant even retrench me correctly. I really need the money ABSA, so that I can get out of this country. Hurry up and get your ducks in a row. UK schools start in September and the longer you take the longer my kids have to wait. They have been spinning lies since day one. I really couldn't care less but this is just getting ridiculous. I was told that we would be on the payroll for 3 months and then get our last months notice and retrenchment packages, that was suppose to be this month. Now the story has changed again and SASBO trying to look like a proper UNION have now stepped in and stuffed up my timeline even more. Truly useless.
