“The record auction gives recognition to the quality of our top tier wines crafted in small volumes and shows that South African wines are deserving of the same high prices achieved by wines of comparative quality around the world. Our auction wines represent all the top growing wine regions in South Africa and show great diversity of style,” said Miles Mossop, chair of the Cape Winemakers Guild.

He expressed his appreciation for the generosity shown by auction buyers in supporting the transformation of the South African wine industry.

“We have been able to plough back into the industry by raising over R1.95m at various events this year for the development of talented young winemakers and viticulturists through the Nedbank Cape Winemakers Guild Development Trust and our Protégé Programme,” he said.

Over and above the main auction, a record amount of R374 800 was raised on the day in aid of the Protégé Programme. This year’s special item sold at the Charity Auction, the one-of-a-kind CWG Auction Magnum Collection of the 2016 auction wines in 1.5 litre magnum bottles, was purchased for R150 000.

The auction, conducted by Henré Hablutzel of Hofmeyr Mills Auctioneers for the 19th consecutive year, attracted a total of 152 buyers comprising 125 local and 27 foreign buyers. In total 2 428 cases (6 x 750ml equivalent) were sold at an average price of R5 697 per case and an average price per bottle of R950.

The lineup of 52 wines included 34 red wines, 15 white wines, 3 Méthode Cap Classique, a Port and a potstill brandy.

The bulk of the wines, 84%, were snatched up by local buyers with 16% bought by foreigners on par with last year. The foreign buyers comprised the most countries ever represented at the auction including the United Kingdom, Hong Kong, Denmark, Luxembourg, Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands, France, Dubai, Brazil and the USA.
