Harare - Zimbabwe has sold 200 million kilograms of tobacco so far this year, beating the 166 million kg sold for the whole of the 2013 marketing season.
Zimbabwe's tobacco production has been on a rebound after plunging to an all-time low of 46 million kg in 2006, before recovering to about 166.6 million kg last year.
According to latest statistics released by the Tobacco Industry and Marketing Board, 200 331 264 kg worth US$636.5m has been sold since the beginning of the season in February.
A total 78.8% of the tobacco was sold through the contract system, while the balance went through the auction system.
Output to date is now above the 2014 target of 170 million kg.
At its peak, Zimbabwe produced 236.6 million kg in the year 2000.
The current season saw more than 103 000 farmers registering with the Tobacco Industry and Marketing Board to grow and sell tobacco.
