Cape Town - The Western Cape Ministry of Agriculture, Transnet and Agri Western Cape held a first planning meeting on Thursday in order to send animal feed from the Western Cape to the drought stricken Northern Cape and North West regions of South Africa.
Provincial Minister of Agriculture Gerrit van Rensburg approached Transnet in 2013 for assistance to transport donated animal feed form the Western Cape to these areas.
Van Rensburg said good harvests during the past few years are making it possible for Western Cape farmers to assist their colleagues in the drought stricken north.
Transnet pledged a train, which will transport the feed free of charge.
At the meeting four collection points were identified, namely the Swellendam and Rietpoel stations in the Southern Cape and the Rust and Poels stations on the West Coast.
Agri Western Cape will arrange with farmers to bring donations to these collection points.
Further meetings are scheduled for later in January when a better indication of the type of feed and donation volumes would be known.
Van Rensburg thanked Transnet for its assistance, and he also thanked all the farmers who have so far pledged donations.
