iPhone 4 arrives in SA

2010-09-20 15:29

Johannesburg - The iPhone 4 will be launched in South Africa on Wednesday by both Vodacom Group [JSE:VOD] and MTN Group [JSE:MTN].

The product was launched in June in the USA, UK and some other European countries as well as Japan.

Sources at Vodacom have confirmed a launch party at its Vodaworld campus in Midrand, Johannesburg on Tuesday night with a midnight launch of the iPhone 4.

MTN has also confirmed that it will be stocking the Apple device, exclusively available from Vodacom until now. MTN is rumoured to be also planning a midnight launch on Tuesday night, but would not confirm or deny this.

Prices for the iPhone 4 are not available at time of writing, but both Vodacom and MTN will provide the device via contract, or as a cash purchase.

Apple has been at the centre of controversy since launching the iPhone 4 over an antennae design that causes a loss of signal if the device is held in a particular way. Nevertheless, consumers have flocked to the iPhone 4 with Apple selling more than threee million units by the end of July.

IM WAITING FOR AND GETTING THE NOKIA N8 UNLESS APPLE CONVINCES ME ON WHY I SHOULD GET A FAULTY(MUCH CRITICISED) IPHONE 4. "You can't make a phone that everyone loves and Apple is not even trying. Much like any other iPhone so far, the iPhone 4 is a phone that everybody loves AND hates."

  • HUH??? - 2010-09-20 15:44

The antennae issue is a non issue - it was AT&T related in the States and affected only 1% of users. Brilliant phone - Will get one.

  • gnplk - 2010-09-20 16:04

I'd stick to my trusty HTC, thank you.

  • Richard - 2010-09-20 16:07

@ iphone sceptic. Really dont think Apple is going to try convince you to buy an iPhone 4. Having sold 3 mil in barely 3 months I thinks it's more a case of them not being able to keep up with the volumes but hey I'm sure Nokia will be delighted for you, after a steady decline in sales they'll be happy to get what ever they can.

  • Dyllon - 2010-09-20 16:09

I always LOVED the iphone... but now that Google has introduced Android, i cant stand the iphone and all the restrictions!

  • THE MAN - 2010-09-20 16:20

this phone is western garbage for kids, grow up man this is something my teenage daughters want not something a grown up adult should be concerned about

  • iphone - 2010-09-20 16:22

iphone has the best touchscreen on the planet. That's what makes it such an incredible experience. I love the HD recording. My mom got the new nokia and the touch screen is just appalling and jerky. Iphone is a way of life. You will hate it until you tried it.

  • Comeau - 2010-09-20 16:24

The iPhone is all good and well, but useless to me unless local networks implement something like Blackberry Internet Service for iPhone. Why should I fork over hundreds in data costs when for R59/month I get unlimited data usage on a Blackberry? For me the main draw to iPhone is applications, but alas the applications that interest me are data-centric, and there's just no supply of that here yet.

  • Jason - 2010-09-20 16:25

Woo hoo. It'll be way over priced, but the fan boys will lap it up.

  • john - 2010-09-20 16:30

I upgraded got a Samsung had it for 3 weeks, took them 4 months to fix it. They gave me another worked a months, took them 3,5 months to fix it. Autopage apologised and replaced it with a HTC. Worked 6 weeks and took 2 months to fix. Autopage apologised gave me a Nokia. It worked fine for 3 months started giving me out of memory errors. Took it to Nokia, fixed it same day. Worked fine for 2 months same error took it in. It had to be replaced, was replaced in a week. 3 months later same error. I am going to get the apple, great service and reasonable phone and I am only getting it on the strength of the service. Nokia service is great but crap phones.

Check out the Samsung Wave S8500 - Awesome touch screen phone with all the bells and whistles at half the price of iphone.

  • Chris - 2010-09-20 16:40

Been using Mac products for many years, and the iPhone will certainly be an awesome piece of kit. Just can't help thinking that Android based phones are still the better option.

  • PhoneNutter - 2010-09-20 17:18

Rather wait for the new Samsung Galaxy S. Yes it looks like the iPhone 3 but it has the new brilliant version of Andriod. It also has a very long list of features, something missing from the iPhone and apparantly it's already making big waves over seas. Should be here with in the next 2 weeks.

  • Iphone4Owner - 2010-09-20 17:18

I live in the UK and have had the Iphone 4 for just over 2 months - it is by far the best phone I've ever had. The antennae issue is rubbish, I've had no issues. I've got awesome apps, email, internet, sat-nav and much more. My girlfriend owns an Android phone, I'll take my Iphone any day...

  • @John - 2010-09-20 17:27

DUDE wat do you do with your phones, take a shower while having a coversation?

  • SteveH - 2010-09-20 17:37

Will we be able to get TV on it like other countries? for example France u get unlimited calls/sms/TV/INTERNET/other for a total of E60 p.m. = R500

  • Dala - 2010-09-20 19:52

To HUH??? I got a iPhone4 today via independant supplier (iGear) and you should honestly do some research before posting irrelevant problems.. It took me 2 minutes to get 'n micro-sim from vodacom and having issues with a microsim is like having issues when the world switched from cassette to CD... And futher more everything else you listed is really subjective.. Flash support is a non-issue, any flash site on the internet today has got iPhone complatable mobi sites (www.sterkinekor.com) ect... But then again, if you rather want to rip off the iPhone4 and go for the coldblooded copycats of the iPhone, Samsung, go for it, you'll want to drive over the phone with your car in less than three months... I've been using Iphones since the first generation... And the problems I've had was minimal nothing compared to the Nokias and Erricsons I had before that.

  • SM - 2010-09-20 19:57

I hope the price will be the same ($499)as advertised on Apple website at launch in USA in July

  • pimpassdaddy - 2010-09-20 20:00

Phone will be around R10 000 cash price... Expect pay in on most contracts.

  • Tisso - 2010-09-21 13:45

Appreciate MTN -potential for competition. This one should tightly be colse to R13,000 cash. Personally sure they'll shift -dont see it well below/above even if they can do R5,000. Now waiting for the LV sleeve...
