World Cup was Fifa’s best ever

Johannesburg - South Africa's successful staging of the 2010 Fifa World Cup boosted the coffers of the International Soccer Federation (Fifa) by R29bn, making the 2010 tournament the most successful in Fifa’s history.

This year's turnover was about 25% more than that in 2006, when the tournament was held in Germany.

This is shown in the recent study by PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), entitled Back on Track? The outlook for the global sports market to 2013.

It appears that the international sports industry is still recovering from the financial crisis, but that certain sectors are still doing very well despite the recession.

Of the massive profits Fifa made from the tournament in South Africa, almost 95% will be used to finance its operating costs for the next four years.

The impact of ticket prices at the Fifa tournament is also evident. As many as three million people attended the matches this year. At an average cost of R1 700 per ticket, total income from ticket sales was R5.1bn.

This figure is more than the combined income from ticket sales for all types of sport in South Africa.
