Plans to fight corruption imminent

Johannesburg - Within the next three to four months firm plans should be seen for government’s renewed fight against corruption.

On Friday Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan told Sake24 that announcements had already been made and that plans for the prosecution of offenders and fines for public servants and business people would soon be in place.

On Wednesday, in his medium-term budget framework, Gordhan railed against fraud, corruption and maladministration, and announced five initiatives for the fight against fraud and corruption.

He also said the inter-ministerial anti-corruption committee, chaired by Collins Chabane, minister in the presidency, was currently investigating procurement and tender fraud worth some R25bn.

The R25bn being investigated did not mean that R25bn had been squandered, said Gordhan.

It was simply the amount under investigation, but the outcome was still uncertain.

The issue was being addressed openly, said Gordhan. Government acknowledged it was a challenge and wanted to play open cards with the public.

The important thing, he said, was not sit back with arms folded but to be proactive in improving measures to counter corruption.
