Govt admits King Shaka mistake

Cape Town - The King Shaka airport was situated 30km outside Durban without thorough planning for public transport to it, said Transport deputy director-general Lanfranc Situma on Tuesday.

He told the parliamentary portfolio committee on transport that government should admit it had been a massive mistake.

The oversight was the result of silo planning without proper consultation. It had been assumed that everyone in Durban possessed a car, he said during the presentation of the Department of Transport’s national transport master plan up to 2050.

Situma added that these days road signs warning people about potholes needed to be erected in South Africa, because the proper actions had not been taken timeously.

The transport master plan consists of comprehensive road, rail, harbour and airport projects up to and including 2050 – at a cost of R777bn.

Some of the plans involve rapid train networks between Johannesburg and Limpopo, Durban and Cape Town.

Pre-feasibility studies will be done so government can decide whether such projects, which in reality involve extending the Gautrein network, are affordable.

Projects regarded as critical include a fast train between Johannesburg and Durban, a passenger train from Pretoria to Polokwane, a doubling of the Huguenot tunnel between Paarl and Worcester and a modern rail line between Port Elizabeth and East London.
