Johannesburg - Yet another high-powered Capetonian emigrant who built a successful career in Australia is returning to join M&CSaatchi Abel.
He is Jacques Burger, who will be heading the agency's Johannesburg office which opens on October 1. He will be partnered by Vumile Mavumengwana as creative director.
Burger, who headed Ogilvy Cape Town when Mike Abel was Ogilvy's Cape-based chief operating officer, was appointed CEO of Campaign Palace, one of Australia's most respected agencies in 2008.
He successfully rejuvenated the legendary agency and led it to a raft of international creative awards. Last year he was named one of the 40 most impressive performers under 40 in marketing and communications in Australia.
Chief executive partner Abel, who left South Africa for Australia three years ago and achieved the position of CEO of M&CSaatchi there, has proved remarkably adept at persuading South Africans to retrn.
His other conquest was Zeyad Davids, who is managing partner digital.
He and the others had significant success in Australia, so they can in no way be described as returning with their tails between their legs.
The new agency has been reasonably successful in winning new business, having picked up MWEB, Sanlam, Furnish, Radisson Blu, Park Inn and Ramsay Media. The Johannesburg office will open a host of new opportunities.
