Low rainfall in southern Namibia has left several Fish River Canyon hikers struggling to find water.
This is far from ideal, given days of 40-degree-plus heat and the shortest possible route of 70 kilometres, with little shade and no swimming holes for respite.
Although sometimes sporadic, water is typically available on the iconic hike that follows Africa's largest canyon. This water usually means hikers can reduce their bag weight by refilling bottles along the route and also enjoy refreshing dips in the soaring temperatures.
