US sentiment buoys JSE

Johannesburg - The JSE was trading in the black at noon on Tuesday as markets continued to be buoyed by a positive outlook on the US which has been sparked by some recent encouraging data.

A local trader said that positive sentiment emanating from the US was lifting markets.

"Europe still remains the question at the moment, but there seems to be quite a bit of effort to resolve the situation."

At 11:54 local time, the JSE All Share index [JSE: J203] had lifted 0.60%. Resources rose 1.07%, platinum shares were up 0.23% however gold shares lost 0.54%.

Industrials elevated 0.44%, banks generated 0.28% and financials took up 0.20%.

The rand was bid at 8.12 to the dollar from 8.18 at the JSE's close on Monday. Gold traded at US$1,624.54 a troy ounce from US$1,615.83 at the JSE's previous close, while platinum was quoted at US$1,458.50/oz, from US$1,401/oz at the previous close.

Dow Jones Newswires reported that European stocks opened higher on Tuesday, after Alcoa began the US earnings season with in-line results and a bullish view of the global aluminium market.

At 11:55 local time, London's FTSE 100 edged 1.08% higher and Paris's CAC 40 rose by 1.87%.

Also, Monday's meeting between the French President Nicolas Sarkozy and German Chancellor Angela Merkel revealed no nasty surprises.

Commenting on the meeting of European leaders, BNP Paribas Corporate & Investment Banking analyst Evelyn Hermann said "Overall, the two leaders presented a picture of united Franco-German eurozone leadership, noting they would like the bloc to remain in its current form." However, the press conference hosted by the two leaders was light on details.

Asian stock markets were higher on Tuesday amid growing optimism the US economic recovery was gaining fresh momentum, while shares in China advanced on moves by Beijing to open up its capital markets further to foreign investors.

Japan's Nikkei 225 rose 0.38%, and Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index gained 0.73%.

Ms. Merkel will meet International Monetary Fund managing director Christine Lagarde later in the day to discuss the Greek bailout plan.
