Johannesburg - Anglo American has appointed Judy Dlamini (54) to the board of Anglo American, incorporated in the United Kingdom.
Dlamini has been appointed as a non-executive director with effect from January 1 2014.
Dlamini is an entrepreneur in the healthcare and global pharmaceutical industries and has gained board experience in the mining, retail and healthcare sectors, including as a non-executive director of Northam Platinum since 2004.
Sir John Parker, chairperson of Anglo American, said he is pleased to welcome Dlamini to the board of Anglo American.
"Judy brings a compelling blend of expertise to the board, as a successful businesswoman with longstanding and public company board experience across a range of sectors, including mining," he said.
"I expect that her entrepreneurial mind-set and experience gained across a range of geographies similar to our own will add further strength to our board."
Dlamini is the chairperson of Aspen Pharmacare, a pharmaceutical business with operations in Africa, South America, Asia, Australia and Europe, and founder and chairperson of Mbekani Group, a South African healthcare investment company.
She started her career as a medical practitioner and specialised in occupational health before deciding to build her business career. After spending two years at HSBC, specialising in transport and energy corporate finance, she began to develop her entrepreneurial interests.
She is also a founder and trustee of Mkhiwa Trust, a family vehicle for social responsibility initiatives, and has served as a non-executive director on the boards of Discovery Holdings and Woolworths Holdings.
Dlamini received her medical degree from the University of KwaZulu-Natal, her MBA from the University of the Witwatersrand and her diploma in occupational health from the University of the Free State.
