SA better off than others

May 26 2009 14:58

Pretoria - Director-General of the National Treasury, Lesetja Kganyago, said in reaction to news of South Africa's first recession since 1992 that it needs to be seen in the context of the world economy contraction of 1.3%, but that the economic storm is more ferocious than initially thought.

"As a country we took decisions earlier to cushion the economy, but the storm is more ferocious than initially thought," he said.

New finance minister Pravin Gordhan was due to speak together with his deputy, but they could not attend the conference due to existing commitments at the cabinet lekgotla.

Added Kganyago: "We are less bad than we would otherwise have been had we not done anything."

He also noted that there were some tentative signs of improvement in the world economy.

He pointed out that capital flows were resuming to emerging markets via flows into bonds and equities.

He said that a combination of "good timing" and "good credit standing" had just enabled South Africa to raise $1.5bn on offshore capital markets.

"Our slowdown is less severe than in most countries," said Kganyago.

"The good news is we are not alone," he said.

"The impact of the global slowdown is less severe than in other countries," he concluded.

Except for China, SA has so far weathered the financial storm best in the world, and not only due to the NCA which I defended over a year ago and which you lot whined about. My conclusion is most of you are inveterate whingers who never miss an opportunity not to whinge even though you don't know what you are talking about. If you think things are bad in SA, move to US, UK or countries in EU and see what bad is. Or read what Robert wrote and shut up.

Well said Virginia. recession or no recession, our country is in a much better state than 30 years ago. The reason our country is " gone to the dogs" is because there are more mouth's to feed. 30 years ago half of these whinges would not have had so much to say coz their bellies were nice and full....now... we have equal playing fields. Everybody feels the pinch. Not nice isn't it???

Consediring how much do local business spend on trading with other local businesses, I'm not surprised. As long we are reliant on imports, cheap or expensive; we have a lopsided economy, government can bring about policy changes and regulations - but so did Europe & USA - did that make a difference - no. Localised trade is answer.

While I don't believe for one fraction of a second the government is actually doing anything of value I imagine this is just a retort against the DA blaming them. The world is in a recession, but I do find it rather disappointing that the "almighty" Trever refused to accept that SA was in that same boat. Swifter action could have lessened the effects. It smacks horribly of, "HIV has not been proven to cause AIDS"! If you ignore it, does it really go away?
