Gauteng whites biggest earners

Aug 11 2008 21:29

Johannesburg - The average annual income of white households in Gauteng in 2006 far exceeded that of other race groups, Unisa's Bureau of Market Research said on Monday.

White households had an average annual income of R253 370. This was far higher than that of African (R90 280) and coloured households (R130 101) and just somewhat higher than the R240 114 income of Asians, the bureau said.

The average annual income of households in Gauteng amounted to R131 563 in 2006, with salaries and wages being their main source of income.

Salaries and wages made up an equal share of the total income of Asian and coloured households (68% each), while the biggest share of the total income was in African households (72%). It made up 66% of the total income of white households.

Notable differences in the percentage share of income from own businesses in total income between the different population groups were found - whites 28.8%, Asians 16%, Africans 12.6% and coloureds 11.3%.

Further comparison of the sources of income for the four population groups showed that income from pension funds was relatively more important to whites (1.7% of their total income) than to Asians (0.2%), coloureds (1.5%) and Africans (1.1%).

Income shares from social pensions and grants were: coloureds 5.4%, Africans 2.3%, Asians 1.3% and whites 0.5%.

Confused

Just came upon this article and now I am really confused. I thought I was an African, but now apparantly I am classified by colour and put into a box by what i earn. In order to be an African I need to paint myself "black" and earn less money?

The Whiteys need to earn that much more because they contribute to the the other groups incomes. Wonder if UNISA brought that facor in, Don't think so. I also wonder why the blacks are the only ones allowed to be called africans.

The South African Institute of Chartered Accountants officially state that: "Ultimately, inflation-adjusted accounts in a low inflation environment insult the user by implying that he lacks the sense to arrive at his own conclusions; by suggesting that he needs his hand held when he is instinctively aware of the route he should take to reach his goal." See: https://www.saica.co.za/default.asp?redir=%2Fforums%2FShowThreads%2Easp%3FSectionId%3D17%26ContentPageID%3D181 I wonder if SAICA is now going to advise SA companies and the SA government not to adjust salaries for inflation? http://realvalueaccounting.blogspot.com/

This whole debate is ridiculous. Sean and Antoinette I totally agree with. Income is according to experience. Or perhaps not - seeing what the CEO of Escom pulls for being inefficient. Perhaps I must also do a survey because the white households in Gauteng are earning more than us poor white guys in Cape Town.

I would like to know something... everytime this topic comes up you will see us whiteys work harder, learn more than the rest to keep in the game of life we commit more and as a result land bigger better more profitable contracts... we get paid according to our efforts and guys who are black that work ALONG side me just shake off extra work cause they know their job is secure. if they dont land a contract and I land three one of mine will be split with them... I get paid more for what I deliver... get over it. Work harder and they will soon see results.

Yes, Antoinette, I thoroughly agree with your comments. Let us also not forget that the biggest earners are also the biggest tax payers!!

Not sure who conducted the stats, surely it is all about capabilities, and being ambitious. It is up to the individual to better themself, and if they can do the job better, then they deserve the bigger salary. You have to work hard to earn the bucks, and not expect everything to fall in you lap....................
