Std Bank to raise charges

Nov 19 2007 17:40

Johannesburg - Standard Bank will raise its transaction fees by an average of 4.65% in 2008, the bank said on Monday.

Increasing competitive pressure, rising interest rates and inflation were some of the reasons for the increase, said the bank's CEO for personal and business banking Sim Tshabalala.

"There's a relatively healthy gap between inflation and the price increases," said the bank's director of banking products Keith Fuller.

Tshabalala would not comment on the Competition Commission's report on banking charges, due to be released early next year.

He however added that "the issues are to be regarded gravely".

Transaction fees on personal current accounts would increase by 5.8% and Mzansi accounts by 2.3%, the bank said.

Referring to SP on bank charges. I think the large banks have become accustomed to high growth rates, now they're pushing to maintain 20-30% growth rates at clients expense. In my opinion, the bigger you are the slower you should go. Overseas 10% growth for a large institution is FANTASTIC, 7,5% HIGH, 5% GOOD, etc. Some institutions let are controlled by greed, hence the skewness of these things. (I'm looking at buying used car R20K below same model brand new; end of term I'll be paying exactly what the new one would've cost through Ford Finaning ???)(What's the point of buying used then, unless Wesbank are like Standard Bank? I was told the bank charges are R150 per month just on this one transaction ??) I won't be using financing via Wesbank then I guess.

Am I not thinking straight, if there is an increase in competition surely Standard Bank should look at the fact and decrease costs where possible to compete with the other banks, if not they are going to loose clients. Raise in interest rates, who looses with these increases, definatley not the bank they score all the way. If Capitec can keep there bank charges down why can't Standard Bank ( or any other bank for that matter). I am going to open an account at Capitec after doing business with Standard Bank for at least 30 years.

No logic to banks. Do not tell me it's about costs etc. I have just received a credit card from a clothing company with exactly the same terms, conditions and facility except there are NO YEARLY FEES. Mmm so I ask who underwrites this credit card? I am told STANDARD BANK with whom I currently have a credit card??? Where is the logic? I have a card directly with the bank and they charge me. I have a card indirectly with the same bank and they do not charge me??? I am waiting??? Any good reasons out there??? OK I'm still waiting????

Rule number 1 : The bank always wins. Rule number 2 : When is doubt about bank charges always refer to rule number 1.

How do banks justify charging a transaction fee of R23.00 to clear one cheque!! A restaurant can sell a meal for close to that.Wait until we have virtual banking - we will no longer need the banks - Govt should review banking licences in conjunction with the competition board investigation. Who really needs the banks - they are becoming outdated - we must just transact directly with each other.Exclude them.

The banks charge so much interest on loans and Bonds, then they still want to increase their bank charges!!! - Can we see what profit they make and what each transaction actually costs. They also give such low interest rates to savings accounts etc. The gap between the lending & borrowing rate is ENORMOUS!!! Also the NCA has put the golden handcuffs on customers, as with the increased bond rate no-one can afford to change banks any more.. What does the CEO get paid, I'd like to know?
