Google SA picks fight

Sep 01 2008 09:56 Marc Ashton

Johannesburg - A row is brewing between Google SA and a local marketing company, Entelligence Ltd, that counts senior South African bankers GT Ferreira and Jannie Mouton among its shareholders.

In essence, Google SA has withdrawn the use of its tools from Entelligence, a critical development for the South African firm which in June signed a contract with TDS Directory Operations to handle Yellow Pages' online marketing.

Ferreira is a former chairperson of FirstRand and Rand Merchant Bank and Mouton heads up listed financial services company PSG. The two have not yet become involved in the dispute on Entelligences' behalf.

The reason for Google SA's actions is that it now wants to offer similar services to Entelligence, and others in its market, whereas previously Google SA only provided the operating platform and allowed marketing agencies to manage the campaigns on behalf of clients.

As a result, Entelligence, which is a Cape-based online marketing and web developer, has laid a complaint with the Competition Commission.

Says Entelligence MD Sean Riley: "We don't mind Google coming in as a competitor, but when that same competitor was previously quite happy to grant you the platform and technology to service these accounts and suddenly elects to switch them off so that they can take the business from you, we feel that's a bit harsh."

His concern is that Google SA is cherry-picking key accounts in the South African market and is taking whatever steps are necessary to ensure that existing agencies cannot continue to use Google tools to market these companies.

'No relevance'

Google South Africa country manager Stafford Masie says contractual agreements between TDS and Entelligence have "no relevance". Google SA will terminate services that would allow Entelligence to carry out their contractual obligations, he says.

The agreement between Entelligence and TDS Directory Operations is to boost traffic to the Yellow Pages website via a number of channels including the use of Google AdWords.

Google AdWords is an online tool for marketers that allow adverts to be displayed on Google network sites that charge advertisers a certain amount every time that somebody clicks on the advert to reach the client site.

Google SA is aware of the relationship between the two companies and even provided credit agreements between Entelligence and itself to facilitate these transactions.

South African agencies such as Entelligence argue that they have spent a lot of time developing the Google brand in South Africa, in the absence of a Google presence in the country.

In correspondence between Masie and Riley, Masie says: "TDS/Yellowpages has been categorised as a direct sales operation (DSO) account and will now be managed by my Google SA sales team within company".

This has taken place despite TDS managing director, Thabo Seopa sending a letter to Masie asking Google to respect existing contractual agreements between TDS and Entelligence.

Actually....if I was the Devil's Advocate, wouldn't that make me Riley's Advocate?? Speak to previous employees of Entelligence, Mark. Don't palpitate over names like GT. He's probably cringing to see his name in any way associated with this issue (especially now that time and Dealstream have passed). Mr Riley is not known for maintaining lasting relationships and is given to rushes of blood to the head. Having met both messrs Riley and Leigh, they remind me of each other in terms of their slick, maverick business style. I will say this for Mr Riley, however, that I don't think he is a crook like Leigh. He is just given to tantrums.

Google is no angel. This type of behaviour is not surprising. Given their size, market dominance and knowledge of the internet business, there is every possibility that a master list of "direct sales operation accounts" exists and each on the list is marked as fair game. Google has been pushing its way into various markets with little regard for collateral damage. The words "Do no Evil", are purely that, words, their actions are far different. Let's see how the Google PR machine spins this little tale.

Google South Africa and Stafford Masie in particular are doing themselves irreparable harm with their amateurish and imbecilic antics. All South African Google accounts should be transferred by Google Head Office from Google Ireland to Google South Africa so they can correctly attribute the South African generated Google revenue where it now rightfully belongs. Then Google South Africa won't have to poach the clients of capable South African search marketing professionals. And the clients won't have to suffer at the hands of Google South Africa's clueless and incompetent in-house paid search campaign management staff. What a joke! I do hope Google Head Office wakes up and replaces the incompetent/BEE compliant and increasingly embarrassingly out of his depth Stafford Masie - and his ill-considered 'marketing strategy' - with an suitably qualified country manager with the personal and professional acumen to build Google South Africa into a good corporate citizen.

I agree, this is ridiculous. How can they just randomly increase the cost per click like that, it totally undermines the whole model. So Stafford Masie & Google want to manage all the top accounts in the country PLUS get revenue from pay per click? Hell, why not just knock out competitors from natural search too.

What I do not get is how Google SA is getting away with this, this is not how Google operates in other markets, so why do it here? Stafford Masie appears to be a bit maverick. This also leaves a sour taste in the mouth when a year ago Stafford and the Google SA team were telling us marketers that they would be working with us and helping local marketers and agencies! Google SA is dragging the Google name through the mud.

who decides on which articles the comment facility is available and on which articles not? why can I comment on this article but not on the the article where the police shot a couple (http://www.news24.com/News24/South_Africa/News/0,,2-7-1442_2386021,00.html) - specifically around the double standards applied when a man on the street hurts someone (and the police opens a docket) versus when a policeman shooting innocent people without following procedure. Why not open a docket against the shooting police officers??? Why describe this as an accident and do nothing?
