SA fuel summit on the cards

Jul 02 2009 13:45

Johannesburg - A summit on the rising costs of fuel will be held by Energy Minister Dipuo Peters, her department said on Thursday.

"She will call a summit of all stakeholders to discuss the rising prices of all fuel - not only petrol," said spokesperson Bheki Khumalo.

Subsidising the price of some fuels was not on the cards.

"I can rule out any subsidies."

Any discussion on a change in the government's current formula of petrol price determination would include the country's unions.

"And the summit won't only be about fuel prices, it will also discuss the Liquid Fuels Charter."

While the minister was pleased with the progress the charter had made, she was "far from satisfied" with the charter in general.

Last month Peters told the African Energy and Mineral Forum that the work that had been done on the actual implementation of the charter was "not very impressive".

She said two evaluations conducted to measure progress on implementation of the charter's provisions indicated the industry had not been able to comply with the crucial elements of ownership, control and procurement.

The Liquid Fuels Charter, signed in 2004, was designed to put 25% of the industry in the hands of historically disadvantaged people by late 2010.

The department would announce the date of the summit soon.

@Robo. My point was,why would the commission go after their employers. As i said, they are minting it from taxes... on fuel. During the budget speech, Trevor increased the levies by 45c. @Collitjies. We in SA make fuel from mostly Refined Crude then Coal (Sasol, abt 25%) and little from Gas (PetroSA, Mossgas - very little). Granted Sasol's based cost is abt 40$, but if they were to sell it cheap, all other refineries would not be able to compete. Plus Sasol would then not be able to supply.

The oil industry is Government sanctioned price fixing, and I dont know why the Competiton Commission does not rule it illegal. A litre of petrol is like a loaf of bread or a pocket of cement, just another commodity and there should be a free market in petrol and diesel just like any other. I should be allowed to import refined petrol/ diesel and sell it anywhere in SA. Instead , we have Govt. colluding with Oil co's to screw the consumer

Why is SASOL charging "BRENT" crude oil prices, I was under the impression SASOL fuel was locally produced. SASOL charges price in US dollars ???.

@mike. High fuel prices does not only increase the cost of driving, it also increases the cost of everything since it needs to be transported and all transportation either petrol or diesel. So whether you have a car or not, you are still affected by high petrol and diesel prices. And as ordinary citizens there is nothing much more that we can do about it.

All they can think about is BEE an AA they are so possesed by it all. Never mind the costs increasing and skills leaving...oh no...let us be like Zimbabwe and focus on removal of all "non-locals". Equality is one thing but the way they impliment these and the criteria proves that we have baboons running this country with very little understanding of eceonomy or the world :(.
