Ex-AngloGold boss may run Eskom

Jul 13 2008 13:00

Johannesburg - Bobby Godsell, the former CEO of gold company AngloGold Ashanti, has been tipped to run beleaguered power utility Eskom.

Business Times on Sunday reported that Godsell will take over the reins from outgoing chairperson Mohammed Valli Moosa.

The paper reported that the announcement is expected to be made at Eskom's annual meeting on Thursday.

It said his appointment by Minister of Public Enterprises Alec Erwin, however, could be criticised by the new leadership of the ANC, which has taken Eskom to task for plunging the country into crisis and for its hefty tariff increases.

The Black Management Forum was in favour of the appointment with its president, Jimmy Manyi, telling Business Times that Godsell "is a competent manager and person and has a wealth of experience in management. His appointment also sends a message that when we talk about employment equity we are not being anti-white."

The Black Management Forum, while supporting the appointment of Bobby Godsell to Eskom, made the comment that when they talk about Employment Equity they are not being anti-white. I would like to believe them, but why then call themselves The BLACK Management Forum??? What sort of reaction would there be if another group called themselves The White Business Forum? Can we not just have a National Business Forum, all concerned with South Africa? When will we learn to drop colour and work as a whole?

Hey Roguetrader I don't think Bobby Godsell is an ar**hole. If he is, I hope that more of them are appointed to positions in other organizations like Telkom, the Land Bank and also into positions of power in the govt, so that the country can be run on business principles and not political ideology. It didn't work long-term with the Nats and and it won't work long-term with the present incumbents either.

Bobby Godsell will get Eskom sorted out effectively and efficiently. Finally there's hope for Eskom and the consumers.

So a sellout to COSATU will save ESKOM? Things are going from bad to worse. Funny how a-holes get invited back to top positions. It's not what you know ....

Eskom must be shivering in its boots at the idea! Imagine, someone running the organisation who might expect a days work for a days pay. Eish, Hau.
