Johannesburg - The JSE has recorded the highest number of trades in its 123-year history, a spokesperson said on Thursday.
Leanne Parsons, head of equities trading at the JSE, said in a statement that a record was set when 184 336 trades, valued at more than R20bn, were exchanged on Wednesday.
"Some of this trade can be attributed to increased global uncertainty, and therefore increased market volatility," she said.
The previous record was obtained in mid-March, when there were 172 433 trade exchanges.
The new record comes after the JSE's introduction of a new billing model, which was implemented on March 1.
The new system was designed to recognise both low value and high volume traders.
