iPhone SE upgrade offer not popular with Fin24 users

Cape Town - Fin24 users are not completely convinced that the iPhone SE is a worthy upgrade for older Apple devices.

Fin24 recently reported that the iStore was offering up to R8 000 as part of a trade-in deal for the latest Apple device.

“I must trade in my iPhone 6, which cost just about R12K for, in my opinion, a lesser phone and pay in R7K? They really think we are all idiots!” wrote Fin24 user Ernie.

“Although I sincerely believe that an iPhone is the best phone you can buy because they work properly and never let you down, they are ridiculously overpriced (even with the exchange rate excuse in SA) and I think Apple abuses the dedication of their supporters. This not only applies to their phones, but also their tablets, laptops and computers.

“Overseas one can still live with the price, but not in this country. If one takes into account that 90% of their computers' internals are identical to most other common Japanese, Korean and Chinese, computers, then I think they should be ashamed to exploit their supporters' ignorance.

“iOS is their saving grace, but they mustn't think that their luck will last forever. Some Android products are becoming extremely tempting,” he added.

Fin24 user Peter was more dismissive, writing: “Not a chance.”

“I will not upgrade because all the iPhone's launched since the iPhone 5 have the same weak battery life,” said Fin24 user Muhammad.

Apple in 2015 increased its brand value at the top of the Interbrand survey by 43% to $170.2bn though in South Africa, Samsung leads with 53% of smartphone market share, according to International Data Corporation.

“I have a Samsung Grand Neo which I need to upgrade if possible just explain to me what is needed because I want an iPhone,” said Fin24 user Estone, indicative of the brand power of the Apple device.

Fin24 user George wanted to trade in his old iPhone 4.

The Samsung Grand Neo and iPhone 4 are not eligible smartphones for trade-in at the iStore.

Fin24 user Annetjie has a Samsung, but is an iPhone fan.

“I would love to have an iPhone. It is a grand phone... my current phone is a Samsung Galaxy S5, also nice, and more affordable. The iPhone is a bit pricey,” she wrote.

Some had specific issues with iPhones.

“iPhone is a sealed unit when warranty is finished, you can’t change battery; no repair at  Apple stores. I would rather go Samsung with removable panel for new batteries and repair even after warranty,” said Fin24 user Lynne.

“I would not upgrade to Apple... they exploit Chinese workers and the environment,” added Fin24 user Mj S.

The iPhone SE is smaller than previous models, giving some fans the feeling of the original.

“I have always like the shape and size of the iPhone. The iPhone SE is bringing back the original shape and size of the iPhone with the latest and better features. I actually was disappointed when I had to purchase my iPhone 6 because I felt iPhone was now chasing the shape and size of Samsung,” said Fin24 user Clovis.
