WATCH: Is Apple a leader or follower?

Cape Town - An online video aims to show that Apple is following the crowd when it comes to technology even as the firm plays up its innovation credentials.

The video, posted by Gizmodo, traces some of the iPhone-maker's announcements at its developer conference and matches them to innovations by rivals including Microsoft and Google.

While Apple revolutionised smartphones with the launch of the iPhone in 2007, it soon faced serious competition from a raft of often cheaper and more functional Android powered devices.

Former Apple CEO Steve Jobs did not hide his disgust for the Google operating system.

"I'm going to destroy Android, because it's a stolen product. I'm willing to go thermonuclear war on this," he told biographer Walter Isaacson.

Despite that, many of the functionalities on Android devices made their way on to the iPhone, including QuickType, synching photos to the cloud and widgets in your notification centre.

However even the latest iPhones require an iTunes account to access content. While this type of feature failed on the Nokia Windows Phone 7 devices, Apple has a loyal and dedicated fan base that supports the company and its ecosystem.

Watch this video and decide for yourself if Apple is a leader or a follower:
