Cape Town - Hackers may be stalking your every move on the web, but by taking some simple measures, you can help protect your data from falling into the wrong hands.
Heino Gevers, security specialist at Mimecast, gives a basic outline of five tips to use to avoid internet fraud and phishing:
1. Education - this is the first and most sensible option. It is important to educate yourself around internet fraud and phishing through available platforms such as your bank for instance and for a business to create awareness of the problem and educate staff internally.
2. Technology - employ technology that interrogates unsafe links and websites in real-time and in non-intrusive manner.
3. Pay extra attention to financial sites and links as hackers tend to mask these to say one thing but do something different. An example is a site that reads "snb.co.za" instead of "fnb", and if you didn't look twice one can easily open the link and expose themselves to cybercrime.
4. Financial sites and links - familiarise yourself with the brand's corporate identify and logos.
5. Use certified websites that can very URLs.
