Cape Town - South African gamers have reacted sharply to the state of broadband in the country.
Fin24 reported recently that companies are offering ADSL services dedicated to gaming and rich media.
Fin24 user Sean Kelly wrote:
"All we gamers need is a stable ADSL connection with a minimum of a 2mbps download speed.
"Contrary to popular belief though, smooth gaming doesn't rely completely on a high download speed, it's really the ping that matters, hence why it is not ideal to game on mobile internet, due to the often high pings and instability of the connection."
That sentiment was echoed by console gamer Tahir Achmat.
"To be honest ADSL and VDSL are okay for gaming but not the best because of fluctuating speeds and ping which are the result of copper wires.
"Whereas fibre connection would be most competent and appropriate purely because of the speeds you get with the result of light being transmitted.
"Also, most gamers are not able to stream their games from the household because we struggle to achieve anything higher than 3mbps upload speeds on ADSL whereas a minimum of 5mbps upload is ideal for streaming on websites such as twitch.tv."
Clinton Claassen complained about lag on games.
"I play Call of duty on a 4mbps line from Telkom and seven out of 10 games lag. I have also tried to stream games like Minecraft but to no avail, our upload is under 1mbps.
"A stable 4mbps line download and stable 4mbps upload is more than enough to play onlin."
