Johannesburg - An image of an Android bot urinating on what appears to be an Apple logo in Google Maps has caused a stir online.
Technology website the Cult of Android first reported on the image that appears as a cheeky joke.
Navigating to a spot in Google Maps near Rawalpindi, Pakistan revealed the image on Friday. The image appeared in traditional map view and not the satellite filter.
UPDATE
Google has since removed the image and apologised for it as the search giant claims it was created by a user and not the company.
The statement dismisses previous claims that the image could have been placed there by a Google software engineer.
"We’re sorry for this inappropriate user-created content; we’re working to remove it quickly," Google spokesperson Mara Harris told The Washington Post in a statement. "We also learn from these issues, and we’re constantly improving how we detect, prevent, and handle bad edits," Harris said.
Android is Google’s operating system for smart devices and the ‘droid’ logo has become synonymous with the mobile technology.
