Will Apple's next iPhone be borderless?

Johannesburg - Apple is reportedly working on a borderless screened smartphone after a patent filed by the company dropped hints regarding what display the future iPhone may have.

A claim in the patent went further to read: “An electronic device may have a display. The display may have an active region in which display pixels are used to display images. The display may be formed from a flexible display substrate such as an organic light-emitting diode display substrate or other display layers.”

The current iPhone 7 makes use of a liquid crystal display (LCD) while the claim hints that the company may for the first time make use of an organic light-emitting diode (OLED) display, commonly found in 4K TVs from numerous manufacturers.

OLED displays make of use of molecules and light produced by electricity to form a display picture which results in a clearer, sharper image.

OLED also produces a pure black, which results in brighter and more vivid colours, while contrast ratio is also infinite with every pixel of the display self-illuminating.

Furthermore the claims that the opposing surface of may have an opening allowing the user to peer through the display.

“The display may have one or more openings and may be mounted in a housing associated with the electronic device,” the patent filed by Apple read.

Standard features in the patent that suggest the cryptic technology is for an iPhone are outlined as follows:

“An electronic component may be mounted in alignment with the openings in the display. The electronic component may include a camera, a light sensor, a light-based proximity sensor, status indicator lights, a light-based touch sensor array, a secondary display that has display pixels that may be viewed through the openings, antenna structures, a speaker, a microphone, or other acoustic, electromagnetic, or light-based component.”

All of which feature in previous iPhone models.
