This new phone can sense fruit, ice cream and your muscle tone

Johannesburg - Chinese electronics manufacturer Changhong has unveiled the world’s first material sensing smartphone at the Consumer Electronics Showcase in Las Vegas.

The Changhong H2 will be able to analyse the properties of food, liquid and body metrics.

The device emits light onto an object, which then returns a spectrum of colour to the device, which then determines the chemical makeup of an object.

“This will give consumers new ways to improve their personal wellness, select the best fruits and vegetables, stick to their diets and nutritional needs, and verify product authenticity in ways never before thought possible,” the company said in a statement.

Changhong is also working to create an eco-system of mobile applications that utilise the device’s sensor for a wider range of use cases.

The technology works through Scientific Consciousness Interface Operations System (SCiO) and offers molecular material sensing and identification technology, which will allow users to scan material and receive insights based on its underlying chemical composition, exploring physical surroundings.

The H2 smartphone can be used on almost any material from identification of compositions like alcoholic drinks, to process control - with the right apps and corresponding database.

Changhong has been the top manufacturer of TVs in the Chinese market for 18 consecutive years and has witnessed significant growth and is now one of the largest Chinese consumer electronics and home appliances providers.

The company specialises in R&D, manufacturing, and marketing of products including TVs, refrigerators, air conditioners, mobile phones, electronic components, and more.

"The Changhong H2 is a remarkable device with unique capabilities that we are excited to add to our growing portfolio of connected and IoT-enabled devices," said Jin Li, president of the company.
