Telkom launches its zero-rated streaming platform LIT

Johannesburg - Fixed and mobile operator Telkom has bolstered its service offering to customers with its game-changing zero-rated streaming platform LIT.

LIT, available from September 1, will allow Telkom’s contract customers to stream TV, videos and music for free with no data cost.

Telkom’s LIT Video and LIT Music offering will allow video and music streaming to its FreeMe 2GB and upwards customers.

LIT offers South Africans content from providers including:
Google Play Music and Movies;
iTunes and Apple Music;
Netflix;
Showmax;
DStv Online;
YouTube; and
Simfy Africa.

Streaming to mobile connections will be in standard definition, as opposed to high-definition and the service is not yet available for prepaid customers. However, Telkom said it is looking at expanding the offering after it has been officially launched.

Telkom also announced the launch of its LIT TV offering for Unlimited ADSL, Fibre and LTE SmartBroadband customers which allows them to turn their normal TV into a smart TV, with pre-loaded content channels from content providers.

Speaking at a media event in Johannesburg on Thursday, Telkom consumer CEO Attila Vitai said the company’s strategy is to take the lead in the data market with the goal of offering customers a compelling entertainment proposition.

“Last year, we revolutionised the mobile industry by launching FreeMe, giving South Africans access to data at a cost that was previously unimaginable. This year, we launched Unlimited Home, giving fixed-line consumers unlimited data and higher speeds,” he said.

“We have already focused on disrupting the data market. Now we are upping our game to provide our customers with a compelling proposition for all the data we’ve given them,” he added.

Subscription costs for content providers are not included. However, Telkom is offering customers direct deductions from their accounts for services.

LIT is available in three options:

LIT Music: LIT Music enables streaming music on a smartphone or tablet for subscribers of the Telkom FreeMe 2GB, 5GB, 10GB and 20GB deals.

LIT Video: LIT Video allows for the streaming of standard definition video on smartphone or tablet from selected video service providers. This service is available to subscribers of Telkom FreeMe 5GB, 10GB, 20GB and unlimited deals.

LIT TV: LIT TV allows for the streaming of TV shows, movies and music at home, without depleting data. Customers will receive a free Telkom LIT TVC 100 media box when they sign up for Telkom’s Unlimited Home 8/10MBps ADSL and fibre offerings.

The offer is also available to existing customers upgrading to the Unlimited Home 8/10MBps ADSL and fibre offerings. Customers who wish to purchase the Telkom LIT TVC 100 media box can do so for R1 099, or they may add it to their existing contracts from R49.99 per month over 24 months.

Telkom recently removed numerous contract options in an attempt to drive customers towards its FreeMe offering.

The company killed its SmartSaver and Unlimited plans from its website, with FreeMe TopUp, FreeMe Family and the various FreeMe bundle options available under its mobile contract offering.

Telkom’s FreeMe for mobile offers customers packages with 1GB, 2GB, 5GB, 10GB, 20GB or unlimited data, ranging from R99 to R999.

The higher-end packages also offer free instant messaging, calls to any network, free SMSes and free WhatsApp messaging and calls.
