Johannesburg - Internet video service ShowMax plans to provide Afrikaans and West African content in international markets in the coming months, according to a Bloomberg report.
ShowMax, which is owned by Naspers, is set to target users in Europe, North America and Australasia from December, the news service reported on Thursday.
The company has also reportedly inked a deal with South Korea’s Samsung Electronics, according to Bloomberg.
A ShowMax spokesperson was not willing to comment on the report.
However, Fin24 understands that the availability of ShowMax content in these other regions could be limited mainly to Afrikaans and African shows and not Hollywood or US productions because of content rights.
Countries such as the US and Australia already have Netflix, which streams Hollywood and US productions.
ShowMax, meanwhile, was launched in South Africa in August this year. The ShowMax launch came after it emerged earlier this year that Netflix could launch in South Africa in 2016.
Upon launch, ShowMax consisted of 750 titles and over 19 000 episodes. However, the service has since expanded to include more content for South African users.
